Based on the initial discussion in the thread below, I am looking for interested parties to fill the list for a NOE buy if possible.

      http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?323456-Poor-man-s-Blackout-100gn-subsonic-223-Rem&p=3893396

      100gn.
      Plainbase.
No lube groove for powder coating.
RN/spitzer type for feeding in semiautomatic.
Specs outlined, but not finished (true cast bullet drawing and .223/Wylde chamber consideration appreciated).

This is a jacketed 100gn that I extrapolated some rough measurements from:

could have done that with a 70 grain bullet. Actually probably a plain based 55-60 would work without leading with pc. Personaly if I was buying this mold specifically for super sonic id want a gas check just for accuracy. I don’t see an advantage to going all the way to a 100 grain for a supersonic bullet you just give up way to much velocity and even with a 1 in 7 twist id be accuracy doesn’t hold up much over a 100 yards. Again a 70 grain plain base would have been much better for your purpose. Heck I even look at it like this. My process for making 55s is slow. I cast them, run them through a lee die to seat gas checks, pc coat them in my tumbler, bake them, let cool, back in the tumbler for another coat, water drop them and run them through the sizer for final sizing. Its some work. Especially when I can find ball and soft point 55s right now for 80 bucks a thousand shipped to my house. Hardly worth the bother of casting and then on top of it 9 times out of 10 those jacketed bullets are going to hands down outshoot the ones I make

then lets talk cost. It cost me @30 bucks for a 1000 checks, my lead is free but if I hand to replace it it would cost me a buck a lb and it takes 8-10 lbs to make a 1000 bullets. More then that if your talking 100 grain bullets. then the cost of pc (pretty cheap) electricity to run my tumbler for about an hour total, propane to run my oven for about an hour and the money I spent on the 6 cav lee mold and push through lee sizer. So all in all I probably have close to 50 bucks into a run of a 1000 bullets. that doesn’t even include my time. Approximately 4 hours total. So if your time is worth say 10 bucks an hour (minimum wage) your doing this whole thing for nothing and could buy jacketed for the same price.

Only reason I even signed for this buy was I foolishly bought a 223 can without educating myself first. I figured it would do double duty on my ars and my 22 lr guns. Well on the AR its still about the same noise level as an unsuppressed 22 mag. Your sure not going to fool anyone that is within 200 yards of you. Doesn’t work that well on 22lrs either. A 22lr can has thinner baffles closer together and cuts noise to about what a pellet gun has, heck ive shot them that all you heard was the bolt cycling. My can isn’t near that quiet with sub sonic ammo. Right now about all its good for is giving me the ability to MAYBE shoot my ars without hearing protection but that’s probably only because I’m half deaf anyway. If this buy want closed id probably cancel my mold. But I guess ive wasted a 100 bucks on stuff more stupid then this and who knows if enough of these get out there someone might find a way to use in subsonic.

Trail Boss just a bad powder to use if you want to cycle the action of a semi. With .458socom you get trail boss to function in an AR with heavy bullets but the gas port has to be opened up considerably larger to do it. I got the mold for supersonic so I don’t have to screw with gas checks all the time.

I’m thinking a reduced load of IMR 4895 may work.  I use 19.5 to 20.5 to cycle all my AR’s with 75 grain cast.  Maybe a starting load of 13.5 and ladder up.

Is it supersonic though? I’m not concerned about that. I know I can make it work supersonic.

Not sure Lloyd, but I hope to find out once I get the mold.  I was just thinking I could use 4895 would be a starting point to try and ladder up or down to find out.

I would have to think a powder that slow isn’t going to produce the pressure needed. The problem we have is powders like that don’t produce the pressures needed and powders like trail boss use such a small amount of powder that although the pressure might be enough theres not enough volume of gas. I would have to guess that if it works its going to be with mid range to slow pistol powders. If I was to start in on it I think my first try would be with power pistol, unique or herco. If that didn’t work id try powders like hs6, bluedot ect. If that didn’t work then maybe aa9 or 2400. Then maybe 110 4227 I don’t think your going to get enough pressure with anything any slower then that. What its going to take is someone that’s either VERY lucky or has lots of time to fool with this trying 4 or 5 powder charges with each of these powders and even trying each load with a std and mag primer.

Not sure Lloyd, but I hope to find out once I get the mold.  I was just thinking I could use 4895 would be a starting point to try and ladder up or down to find out.

that’s the holy grail and the guy that got them to work with jacketed has his lips zippered shut.

I mean, there are factory loads with a jacketed bullet which work–so doing cast should be just fine.  Just gotta find out what powder to use.

I’ve been playing around with quickload and, as lloyd smale says, nothing seems to meet the parameters being looked for : subsonic that will cycle an AR. Some come close, meaning near subsonic and at the magic pressure of 8k psi, and might be worth a try :

                    10.7g H322 gives you 8075psi at 7 inches 1250fps

                    15g IMR 4955 Enduron gives you 7852psi at 7 inches 1259fps

7.5g Lil Gun gives you 8086psi at 7 inches 1239fps

I was just pulling powders for a burn rate chart.

With these long skinny bullets, if you are powdercoating, I would recommend lubing the bullets post PC before sizing so you don’t get any stuck.  A little sizing wax helps these bullets in the sizing process with that long portion that needs to be sized–don’t ask how I know ;D

The non-lube groove versions will be in the store under the HTC section.  I believe the .225’s are done and Al said he hopes to get the .226 sizes listed and discount codes out today.  Stay tuned!

can you check how herco, 110, unique and 1680 come in at?  Some more that might be worth looking at are blue dot hs6  re7 and 4198 to see how they stack up. Are those velocitys at 7 inch or at 16 inch? Hate to throw all of this at you but I’m about as computer illiterate as they come. Logging on is a challenge for me. 😮
